Perhaps less than 20 examples extant in original configuration
The bayonet lug is at the base of the muzzle. Barrel is proofed on the left side, “V” over “P” over an eagle head. The barrel tang is dated 1841. Lock has a detachable brass pan and is marked with a left looking, drooped wing eagle over “US” in front of the cock and “SPRINGFIELD 1842” behind the cock. Iron trigger guard with “US” proofed iron buttplate. The musket also features an iron side plate, barrel bands, nosecap, ramrod and sling swivels. An identifying feature of Model 1840 is the circular opening in the center of the hammer.
This gun features a nicely grained walnut stock with 2 inspector’s marks near the sideplate that read “EB” and “WAT” The “EB” initials are for Elizur Bates who had a 30 year career at the Springfield Armory as Master Armorer and Inspector of contract arms.
The “WAT” mark is that of William A. Thornton – Brevet Brigadier General, U.S. Army, chief inspector of contract arms longer than any other inspector. See Military Arms Inspector Marks by Anthony Daum and Charles Pate to learn about the lives and careers of each of these inspectors.
Of the M1840s produced, 26,841 were converted to percussion at the arsenal with many others being converted later. Therefore, it is very difficult to find a Model 1840 that has not been converted and incredibly difficult to find an example like this – in immaculate original condition.
The M-1840 was originally designated as the M-1835 but because of production delays and alterations, the first guns were not ready for shipment until 1840. The M-1840 was the last standard production flintlock musket in the United States.
