The bottle has a seal of the Lowther family of Swillington House, Swillington, Yorkshire, probably Sir William Lowther, a member of Parliament for his district in Yorkshire.
Item Date: 1680’s - 1690’s
Measurement: Height: 6.75"
Material: Freeblown glass
Item Condition: This is an important, early bottle that was excavated and has been damaged. The body of the bottle, originally dark green, has devitrified due to burial and is now a mottled goldish color. The neck suffered a clean break where it meets the body; it was professionally restored and displays well. There are several large chips to the string rim, most of which have discolored along with the rest of the bottle, but one chip displays the original black glass appearance suggesting this happened at the time or after the bottle was excavated. There is one chip to the left edge of the seal.
Literature: See David Burton: English Sealed Bottles and the families who owned them (2015), pages 1330-1331 for overview photo of the bottle and a detail image of the seal.
