Made for merchant and delegate to Virginia legislature, Thomas Smith
This stoneware jar was made in Baltimore, and it is one of a small group of surviving jars made for merchant and delegate to the Virginia Legislature, Thomas Smith for use on his Airville Plantation in Gloucester County, Virginia. (Smith acquired Airville in 1827 and died in 1841.

Item Condition: This jar has some restoration to the cobalt below the inscription, which may be the result of chipping and how the jar was used through the years. There is also some restoration to chipping to the left proper handle.
