This is a first type being converted by the factory to an experimental second type. The first standard design Sharps 4-A had a screw under the barrel serving the barrel stop. As seen in this example it was replaced by a small pivoting bar held by a cross pin in the front of the frame. Both systems served the same purpose – to prevent the barrel group from suddenly sliding completely off the frame and perhaps being lost or damaged. As it turned out, the “screw in the frame” first type may have succumbed to a tendency to unscrew a bit at a time, eventually falling away and allowing the barrel group to unexpectedly slide off. The “pivoting block” of the second type was much less likely to come apart. The pin is driven in very tightly. This retrofit certainly wasn’t done as a cost saving measure, since the relieving of the frame and the pinhole, plus the manufacture of the block and the pin would seem to require more machining and time that the simple screw.
