A very early issue of the U.S. Mint circa 1806-1807. Dies engraved by John Reich. Likeness based on Gilbert Stuart’s first portrait of Washington painted in 1795.
Obverse: Bust of Washington in Civilian Dress Facing Right. At the base of the shoulder a small R; to the left G. WASHINGTON, to the right PRES. UNIT. STA.
Reverse: A draped pedestal with U.S. Shield on the right panel; on top crossed sword and fasces encircled by a laurel wreath; in exergue 1797. Around the perimeter: COMMIS. RESIGNED: PRESIDENCY RELINQ.
