Roundabout Chair in Original Surface, New England

Roundabout Chair in Original Surface, New England

The carved pillow-crest on flat arms terminating with robust out-scrolled handholds having notched returns are raised on ring turned tapered (stiles) posts centering vasiform splats set in bold molded shoes. The deep skirt-profile may have once concealed a close stool. [We have a nearly identical chair that remains fitted for a pot]. The frontal cabriole leg features interior ā€œCā€-scrolls, returns and relief carved molding conforming to upper profile; rear legs are bottle/vasiform and reel form. The chair remains in what is likely its first surface displaying a good patina.

As previously mentioned, we have a second identical chair except one chair is a tad taller, otherwise they display the same shop traditions and were likely made from the same templates.
