Probably Philadelphia (Robert Street, 1796-1865)
Beautifully rendered compositions showing unidentified seated man and woman… the clarity is typical of the artist’s work.
The respected and popular artist exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy for the first time in 1815. In 1840 a major cataloged exhibition featuring 172 pieces of his work was held at the Artists Fund Hall in Philadelphia. The artist participated in group shows including the Artists Guild until 1845; at the Franklin Institute in 1847 and 1851; the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts until 1861; and at the Apollo Association in New York in 1838 and 1839.
Portraits by Street are in several collections including the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.
