Alexander Hamilton (1755/57 – 1804) Rollinson, William, 1762-1842 (Engraver)
During the military build-up with France, President Adams reluctantly appointed Hamilton as a major general of the army with strong support from Washington. At the time this engraving was made, Alexander Hamilton served as the inspector general of the United States Army from July 18, 1798, to June 15, 1800. Since Washington preferred staying at Mount Vernon and only leading in battle, when necessary, Hamilton effectively took charge of the army, which displeased Adams.
