Merchant and farmer, member – Massachusetts convention that ratified the Constitution
An unsigned half-length portrait facing right of the balding, gray haired bespectacled aging Nathaniel Barrell; painted in 1816 when he was 84 years old. In chalk on the verso is period script identifying Barrett, York, Maine & more.
Barrell was born in Boston…son of John Barrell and Ruth Greene; he married Sally Sayward (1737-1805) in 1758 daughter of Jonathan Sayward (1713-1797) of York, Maine.
The artist created three portraits with a nearly identical composition being within the Old York Historical Society collection: Sayward-Wheeler House, York, Maine. The third nearly identical portrait is in the Historic New England collection.
