This is a carbine with single barrel band fastening forend; front site doubles as bayonet lug. Trigger guard serves as breech lever… lowering block for top loading. Standard markings on receiver: PEABODY’S PATENT JULY 22, 1862 / MAN’F’D BY PROVIDENCE TOOL CO. PROV. R.I. The impressed “WC” inspector’s mark is unknown and considered to be a factory inspector. The mark is found on the many contract carbines and rifles made for domestic and export contracts.
