Boston, Massachusetts
(ABRAHAM LINCOLN.) Martin Milmore, sculptor. Parianware bust of Lincoln. Parian, 14 x 7 x 5 inches, signed faintly in mold “M Milmore”; clean with minimal wear, detachable base affixed with bolt. [Staffordshire?], circa 1865 Martin Milmore (1844-1883) was a well-regarded Irish-born sculptor from Boston whose bust of Lincoln was widely circulated. We don’t know exactly when the present example was produced, but a clipped Boston Transcript advertisement in the files of the Lincoln Financial Foundation dated 5 December 1865 reads “Parian busts of President Lincoln. The best and most perfect likeness yet sent here, made from a cast by Milmore by the best modeller [modeler] in Staffordshire–in three sizes.”
