Portsmouth, New Hampshire
Paint decorated, Nathaniel A. Haven bucket, he joined the Humane Fire Society January 6, 1814. Probably the only extant bucket displaying owner’s address: 45 Pleasant Street.
The design of the bucket is specified in the Humane Fire Society by-laws [no mention of address requirement]. This is the first bucket we [and colleagues] have seen of this vintage with an address. The fact that the by-laws exist is great. They confirm that Nathaniel Appleton Haven Jr. joined the Humane Fire Society January 6, 1814. Front of the bucket displays “No./1” over a scrolled banner reading “N. A. Haven Jr” surmounted with angelic figure flanked by scrolls. Beneath the banner is displayed “H-F-S” above “1796”. The owners address “45 Pleasant Street” is displayed on the back.
