A Massachusetts native, Brown studied in France, exhibiting in the Paris Salon in 1875. He maintained a Boston studio with his wife Agnes, also a well-known New England artist. Brown was well regarded in his lifetime for his landscapes, as he is today, and received a medal at the 1893 Columbian Exposition.
