WELCOME TO THE LAND OF LIBERTY
A historical Staffordshire transfer printed plate featuring embossed floral design with polychrome enamel on edge. The dish commemorating the Revolutionary War General La Fayette upon his return to tour the United States in 1824 as the guest of President Monroe.
Entitled “General La Fayette, Welcome to the Land of Liberty.” The heavily embossed hand-painted floral border centering the bust representing the Marquis de Lafayette surmounted with “General La Fayette / WELCOME TO THE LAND OF LIBERTY”. Beneath the portrait is: “He was born at Auvergne in France 1757, joined the American struggle in 1777 and in 1824 returned to repose in the bosom of the land whose liberty he in part gave birth to.”

Literature: See David and Linda Arman, Anglo-American Ceramics Part I, page 125, L.-6. Arman states that the design is extremely rare and proposes that the portrait of Lafayette may have been made using a bust of George Washington whereas it varies so greatly from other Lafayette portraits.
