An exceedingly rare Staffordshire molded commemorative pitcher, featuring relief portraits and banners: ‘WASHINGTON HIS COUNTRY’S FATHER” and “LAFAYETTE THE NATION’S GUEST”’ at sides, and the heraldic American eagle surmounted with a raised white [clouded] banner containing 13 stars above. below the collar festooned with a fruited grapevine…all against a blue band. The C-scroll handle and spout are ornamented with a raised leaf motif. The base with for concentric rings rests on a projecting foot.
Many souvenirs were produced during Lafayette’s 1824-1825 tour of the United States [as a guest of President Monroe]. Considering Lafayette’s friendship with Washington and the role he played in the American Revolution, it is not surprising that many of the artifacts showed portraits of both heroes. The C-scroll handle and spout are ornamented with a raised leaf motif. The base with for concentric rings rests on a projecting foot.
