Provenance: Thomas Wells Durant and Adelaide Hutton Durant to an Indiana collector. Sotheby’s Americana Sale, January 2014, lot 371. Thomas Durant was a sportsman, playboy. First husband of Adelaide Brevoort Close, son in law of Majorie Merriweather Post and Edward Close. (Later Adelaide Riggs) He was divorced by his wife in 1936. Father of Marjorie Merriweather Durant (later, Majorie Dye). He was born in Waterbury, Connecticut, and was the son of Harold R. and Mary Ann (nee Walker) Durant. For many years, the best friend of actor Charlie Chaplin. Avid Polo Player.
