Steam, and Sail Sidewheel Paddle Boat
The ship flying pennants makes her way under steam power, he stacks billowing smoke. At the bow are two Tars, one with a 5-draw telescope; on the top platform to left of paddlewheel is a sailor wearing a tall top hat…there are nine people shown on deck aft of the sidewheel, all but one wearing sailor or top hats with low crowns. The vessel is centered by large floral devices.
The paddle-wheel steamboat first appeared in North America for use on the Delaware River in 1787. After the inauguration of Robert Fulton’s New Orleans in 1811, hundreds of similar boats worked in the Mississippi River system between 1830 and 1870.
