Pitcher, George Washington Portrait, Brown
Brown-glazed pitcher of octagonal form, molded on one side with a portrait of George Washington after Daniel Eccleston, the other side displays the Great Seal of the United States, the panels on the corners and neck enclosing strapwork and stars within foliate scroll-edged borders, unmarked.
Daniel Eccleston, a wealthy Quaker radical (1745-1821) of Lancaster, England, spent three years travelling in North America during the 1780s. He was pro-American, backing both American independence and Native American rights. An admirer of George Washington, he had a portrait medal struck to commemorate the president in 1805.
