Hartford Connecticut Area, possibly Suffield
An unusually small Queen Anne chest featuring shell and floral carved drawer fronts, shaped skirt, and cabriole legs
Item Date: 1770-1785
Measurement: Height: 72"; top case: 32.75" x 17.5"; bottom case: 34.25" x 18.5"
Material: Cherry with pine and poplar secondary woods
Item Condition: Brasses are period but not first set, several splits to drawer lips now repaired; one knee return possibly restored. When found by John Walton the top and bottom were separated; lower case had a top applied; top case had casters. When the cases are compared it is evident that top and bottom belonged together; obvious consistency in construction, tool marks [width and depth of plane marks] and joinery... Walton reunited the pieces. The lowest drawer bottom in bottom case is replaced, drawer sides repaired; some expected repairs to lower drawer bottom sides... some drawer runners replaced or reversed. (All trivial)
Provenance: John Walton 1981, Thomas Kugelman, Peter Eaton 1985, Private Collection to AAAWT 2022.
Price: $14,500
