Lettered edge: AN ASYLUM FOR THE OPPRESSED OF ALL NATIONS
This is an undervalued token issued during the token craze that swept England in the latter part of the 1790’s. It could have circulated as money but was more likely struck for collectors of that period. In 1793, President Washington sent a letter to the Mechanical Society of Baltimore in which he expressed his belief that Americans should show themselves to be the “true friends of mankind” by making their country not only an asylum for the oppressed of every nation but a desirable residence for the virtuous and industrious of every country.” This of course resonated throughout Europe. The token carries an excellent portrait of Washington executed by Thomas Wyon.
