John Hawkins has not been positively identified, however there was a Hawkins family living at Trewithin near Truro, Cornwall in the eighteenth century. Alternatively, there is a sixteenth century family of Hawkins living in Plymouth, Devon. There are two of these “stretched bladder” bottles known as well as a mallet with the identical seal, probably made at the same time. It is most unusual to have the same seal on these two different bottle forms.

Item Condition: There are the usual chips and minor losses of the mouth and string rim. There is a .5-inch chip to the edge of the seal at 10 o'clock. The bottle surface is smooth and glossy with little evidence of wear.
