A fine solid parianware statue of “Washington” in stride, holding a rolled paper in his right hand, left arm bent clutching his toga to his chest. Under his toga, he wears his colonial attire, buckled shoes and stockings, and standing on circular base impressed “WASHINGTON”.
This statuette was modeled after Sir Francis Chantrey’s seven-foot Carrara marble statue of George Washington, which was installed in 1827 at the Massachusetts State House in Boston. Likely executed around the time of the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial Exposition, this noble, miniaturized figure of America’s first president reflected the patriotic sentiment in the country around the time of the first centennial. *From the Collection of the Late Edward C. Gillette.
