This stoneware jug is one of a small number of surviving pieces bearing the storied African American potter, Thomas Commeraw’s earliest maker’s mark, “COERLEARS / HOOK / N. YORK.” Until recently, this jug was owned for 50 plus years by a private collector on Long Island. This is one of the best extant stoneware pieces bearing this early mark to have survived.

Exhibition History: This jug was displayed as part of the New York Historical Society and the Fenimore Art Museum’s 2023 exhibit, Crafting Freedom: The Life and Legacy of Free Black Potter Thomas W. Commeraw.
