There are three of these types of jars featured in this collection, which were probably made in the Hudson River region during the late 18th century. This jar is decorated on both sides with incised flowers and the initials “HS.” An inscribed number “5” is also found on this jar, which is reminiscent of traditions ascribed to German stoneware. This American-made jar was likely influenced by German production. This jar may also be related to a stoneware jar owned by the Huntington Museum in California that was made in either New Jersey or New York about 1750.
