LIBERTY FOREV / WARNE & LETTs 1807 / S. AMBOY. N. JERSY

Stoneware jar made at the factory of Thomas Warne and Joshua Letts in South Amboy, New Jersey in 1807; stamped “LIBERTY FOREV / WARNE & LETTs 1807 / S. AMBOY. N. JERSY.” This impression is possibly a reference to President Thomas Jefferson’s trade embargo with both England and France at a time when the young republic was in danger of becoming directly involved in the Napoleonic Wars.
