Marcia Woodbury (1865-1913) Along the Wharves at East Gloucester, Massachusetts

The artist first studied art with Charles Woodbury whom she soon married; she is noted for her figural works in pastel, watercolor and oil. She and her husband honeymooned in Europe in 1890, which became a source of many of her paintings that included Dutch children. She frequently returned to Europe, observing works by Old Masters, and writing commentaries on Dutch painters. She also studied in Paris at the Lazar School.

In the late 1880’s, the couple settled in Ogunquit, Maine.
Mrs. Woodbury was a prolific painter whose work was exhibited in the United States and Europe and occasionally won prizes, but she never received recognition towards that of her husband’s. A year after her death at age 48 in 1913, her husband organized a solo exhibition of her work at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.
