Rare Orvill M. Robinson Patent, Single Shot Rifle

The rear top of the iron receiver has a raised silver oval marked “ROBINSONS. PAT/MAY 25 1875”. The rifle was designed and patented by Orvill M. Robinson of Upper Jay, New York. [Winchester Repeating Arm Co. later bought is patents] It is believed A.S. Babbitt of Plattsburgh, New York, manufactured the arms and the Adirondack Firearms Company of Plattsburgh, New York, was a financial entity only and was formed to market the rifles. FLAYDERMAN’S GUIDE only lists the tube loading rifle variation which was manufactured circa 1870 to 1874 with less than 600 manufactured. This example, however, is a single shot breech loading rifle and has been labeled as “sporterized rolling blocks”. When the lever is operated, the block action rolls back and ejects the cartridge. The barrel has an empty dovetail slot on the top flat near the muzzle, a rear dovetail slot holds a partial rear sight, folding sight ladder without a sight aperture on tang, scissor style lever and plain trigger and smooth forearm with pewter tip and checkered straight grip stock with crescent buttplate.

Too late to be listed in Stockbridge.
