Garden of Eden, Possibly By Erastus Salisbury Field (American, 1805–1900)

Field painted two other versions of the Garden of Eden, both more expansive, and further populated with various animals, in addition to Adam and Eve. These are held at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Massachusetts and the Shelburne Museum, Shelburne, Vermont.

Item Date: Circa 1860

Measurement: Frame: 23" x 16.5"; View: 19.5" x 13"

Material: Oil on canvas; original stretcher; likely the original frame painted brown.

Item Condition: In overall good [stable] condition; displays well. Two repairs visible to verso, with a circular patch (approx. 1 1/4 inches in diameter) applied to lower center and larger oblong patch (approx. 3 x 4 inches) applied at far right, covering an L-shaped tear. These patches correspond to smaller [minor] visible areas of inpainting observed under UV light, including to Adam's head, arms, and torso.
